NASA’s first medical evacuation from space went smoothly with the four members of SpaceX Crew-11 splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast early Thursday after an overnight departure from the International Space Station.
Instead of remaining at the International Space Station (ISS) for the full duration of their mission, the four crew members are coming home a month early due to a medical issue with one of the astronauts.
SpaceX is now seeking FAA approval to add new trajectories as Starship strives to reach orbit. Under the plan, the rocket would fly over land in Florida and Mexico, as well as the airspace of Cuba, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, likely disrupting hundreds of flights.
Live updates from SpaceX’s Wednesday afternoon Starlink 6-98 mission that launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
SpaceX knocked out Friday the first of a series of afternoon launches in the coming week with another Starlink mission from Florida's Cape Canaveral.
Crew-11’s departure leaves the ISS, which is normally staffed by seven astronauts and cosmonauts, in the hands of cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, who replaced Fincke as the Expedition 74 commander. Astronaut Chris Williams and cosmonaut Sergey Mikaev also remain onboard the orbital lab.
